It doesn’t have any clever “look at me” flasing/glowing/blinking lights. One tiny light in the back will confirm it is on. But you won’t need to check because “it just works”.
Here are some great features of the Western Digital Elements 2TB:
- Simply affordable
- Easy to use USB 2.0
- No hassles, no complicated instructions
- suited for convenient plug-and-play with most desktop or notebook computers

The hard drive is enclosed in a somewhat heavy but simple metal case, and Western Digital seems to take great pains with their retail packaging to minimize shock without using excessive packaging materials. They are using a GreenPower drive in there, so it remains quiet, cool, and merely sips energy. The drive also comes with the benefit of having absolutely no useless backup software preinstalled.
Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the Western Digital Elements 2TB
This elements hard drive has a sleek and sexy, minimalist design. It is well built overall and constructed of durable plastic. There is a slot for the USB cable, a slot for the power adapter and a tiny circular white light which blinks when it is in use. This is a hassle free drive and is not bundled with any of the extra software which is exactly what I wanted. You simply plug it in and it works. It can easily be formatted to work with macs as well. I’ve been using WD hard drives for years and I own several models of the “essential” and “passport” editions. They are very reliable. (G. Kumar)

Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the Western Digital Passport 1TB
I bought this as a primary backup for a laptop. With USB 3.0, it is really fast backing up – don’t worry, it is backward-compatible with USB 2.0. Here is how easy it was to get up and running:
1. I opened the box and took the drive and cord out of the protective packaging.
2. I plug one end of the cord into the drive and the other into the laptop.
3. After the laptop recognized the drive (running on Windows 7), I clicked two buttons.
4. The drive backed up 200+ gigabytes of photos, home movies, and my documents. (M. P. Gallagher)

Western Digital claims to have created the first truly all-in-one back-up system with the release of the My Passport Essential 500GB. The drive itself is incredibly small. It’s just a centimetre and a half thick and takes up less space on your desk than a real-life passport at 8.3cm wide and 11cm tall.
The software offers an excellent range of tools. For instance, you can set up how soon you want the drive to power down if left alone. There are options to wipe the disk or encrypt it with a password, too – the latter being useful on a disk that’s perfectly sized for popping into a bag and taking on the road. SmartWare uses 256-bit encryption, which is unbreakable.

Here are some great features of the Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB:
- Connecting with your USB 2.0 port today and using with USB 3.0 when you’re ready
- Transferring files up to three times faster when connected to a USB 3.0 port
- Protecting your data with automatic, continuous backup
- Adding extra storage space for photos, videos and music
- Securing private or sensitive data with password protection and hardware encryption
This external hard drive is perfect for anyone who wants to spend a little extra money to future-proof their computer (by backing up your files with the capabilities of USB 3.0). Hard drives have come a long way; this one is light, compact, and doesn’t need to be plugged in. The backup software that comes on the hard drive is easy to use and doesn’t take up much space. If you’d rather back everything up your own way, it is easy to remove for extra space too!
Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB
When it arrived I opened the box and retrieved the drive. Having done that, I gently shook the drive to make certain that nothing was loose inside. Then I physically examined it to make certain that the ports were properly fitted and aligned with the outer case. Everything was fine. As I am using the Ubuntu Linux operating system on my computer, the drive opened instantly. The drive now has 465.6 GB of available space. I copied some files onto the drive and they installed perfectly, just as they have done on my other external hard drives.
As is, it will work perfectly with Microsoft Windows systems and, with reformatting, it will work with Apple Mac systems. (L. H. Bulk)

Seagate Freeagent 1TB external hard drive is truly portable, and powered with only a USB cord. So you don’t have to plug this external drive into a wall socket to use it. Installation is as simple as plugging the USB cable into a slot on your computer. No software, no extra work, just plug and go.
Here are some great features of the Seagate Freeagent 1TB:
- USB 2.0 plug-and-play drive
- Easy-to-use preloaded backup and encryption software
- Upgradable to USB 3.0, FireWire 800 or eSATA or access content over the network and on TV
It’s small, it’s sleek. It’s ready to be used on a Mac or a PC, with an NTFS driver that’s pre-loaded onto the drive. Perhaps the most unique feature about this drive is its flexibility. This drive can be adapted for use with the fastest transfer method available on your system.
Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the Seagate Freeagent 1TB
The design of this external drive is excellent. It is made of piano-black plastic that is matte on the bottom (to prevent it from sliding around as well as to avoid scratches) and shiny on the top and sides. It also allows the use of a single USB connection for data and power, unlike many other portables that need two connections to function properly. Windows 7 immediately recognized the drive and installed the appropriate drivers.
Where things really get interesting is in the design of the enclosure, which has a separate USB connector piece that plugs directly into the SATA connectors of the hard drive itself. This allows for you to swap out the connector once USB 3.0 is released, or even a eSATA connector if Seagate releases one. It also allows for you to dock the drive in a Seagate hard drive dock. This open-ended design is fantastic and I’m surprised it’s not available on more external drives.(N. Beauchamp)

Here are some great features of the Western Digital Elements 1TB:
- The drive is in a great size
- The drive is quiet. No noise at all- no fans, no disk heads chattering, nothing.
- There are no fancy lights. There is one little LED on the rear that you never see. No fancy lights, flashing LEDs, fancy bar charts, nothing
- It uses a mini USB connector, but it is supplied with the drive
- No included software/firmware that you have to fight with to delete
- No problems attaching to computer or being recognized by OS
Transfer rates with this drive are pretty good, considering the USB 2.0 connection data gets transferred at anywhere from 20 to 50 megabits per second. This is a very simple hard drive, having only the AC port, the USB port, and a small, white LED that isn’t bright or overwhelming like some LEDs on other external hard drives.
The casing on this drive is made out of a type of durable plastic. It looks sleek and shiny, and doesn’t feel cheap or weak. The drive is also pretty lightweight.
Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the Western Digital Elements 1TB
Installation was was truly “plug and play”. I simply took it out of the box, plugged it in, and it was immediately recognized by the DVR. I have since transferred about 200gb of content to/from it, and have watched content directly from the drive. So far, it is working perfectly. It automatically spins down after a few minutes of non-use, as well as when the DVR is powered off.(ScottW)
